The Basics of Poker

Like any other game of chance, poker involves betting, bluffing, and misdirection. While the history of the game is apocryphal, it is likely that its origins originated in the seventeenth century French game poque, from which we get the word poker. The game was later modified into the German form pochen, a variant of primero, and was brought to North America by French settlers. It has been a popular game for over 400 years, and is considered one of the most entertaining and addictive forms of gambling.

Almost all forms of poker are played using chips, which are generally given out to players in groups of seven or more. A single chip represents the lowest denomination, the white. Red chips are worth five whites, and blue chips are worth ten, twenty, or thirty reds. Usually, each player buys in with the same amount of chips. The more players there are, the higher the value of the pot. For games with more than eight players, two separate games are organized.

A standard deck of 52 cards is used for the game, but some games use more than one pack, or include jokers. In most variations, players are dealt five cards face-down, ranked from Ace high to Ace low. A poker hand consists of five cards, each representing a particular suit. Some games include Wild Cards that can be any suit. These are only used in games where there are more than ten players. For more than ten players, it is recommended that two separate games be played.

In almost all games, players place their chips into the pot prior to the game. A player has the privilege to be the first to bet, or to bluff another player. This action is known as the ante. Once a hand is dealt, all players must “buy in” to the game. The amount that each player contributes to the pot is known as the “ante”. This is the first betting action. If no one has been betting before, the hand is said to be tied.
